Early gender detection

A DNA test using maternal blood (non-invasive).

How does it work?

The gender blood test is a blood test taken from the mother which looks for Y chromosomes in the mother’s blood. A boy has XY chromosomes and a girl and has XX chromosomes. Identification of any Y chromosomes within the mother’s blood sample will indicate you are having a baby boy, if only X chromosomes are identified this indicates you are having a baby girl.

  • The test is safe (non-invasive) and scientifically proven
  • Quick and simple
  • Over 99% accuracy
  • Available from 7 weeks gestation
  • Blood is taken by a Healthcare Professional using appropriate PPE.

If you choose the option without a scan because you have already had a scan during this pregnancy, you must bring your report to your appointment in order for the test to be performed.
If you have not had a scan during this pregnancy, you must book the test/scan option. This is because we need to check:

  • the number of babies
  • your baby’s heartbeat
  • that you are at least 7 weeks pregnant
  • and to check for vanishing twin pregnancy

This test does not check for chromosome conditions such as Trisomy’s 13, 18 and 21. If you are wanting to check for chromosome conditions, please see our NIPT page.

Your results will be sent directly from the laboratory.
